Business Ethics for Organization: Values and Culture

In order to draft a code of ethics for the given company, it seems necessary to determine the notion of business ethics. It can be considered as a section of professional ethics. The subject of business ethics is moral values, specific ethical principles, relations, and regulatory norms applied by employers and employees (Chmielewski, n.d.). Business ethics as a system of rules and principles held by employees of the organization, of course, is an important part of the corporate culture of any company. Rules of conduct with colleagues and customers, respect for the environment, respect for rights of others, the integrity of the competition – these and many other elements of the organizational culture are primary in ethical business.

This control can be carried out with the help of special tools, the most significant of which is the corporate code of ethics. Having formulated the moral position in the code of ethics, managers are able to demand their execution and to impose sanctions for breach of the provisions of the code.

In order to resolve complex ethical dilemmas that arise in the process of decision-making, it seems appropriate to apply the regulatory approach and deontological type of ethical theory. I made the following draft of code of ethics, where employees should:

  • honestly and professionally perform their duties within the working time caring for the property of the company;
  • improve their professional skills and competence achieving the best results in their work;
  • complete all orders and instructions of managers in a timely manner except illegal ones that contradict interests and corporate standards of business conduct;
  • maintain the loyalty to the company in all cases, in other words, to put corporative interests above personal gain;
  • not to disclose information containing trade secrets and other information about the company;
  • not to engage in financial and other relationships that might discourage the conscientious performance of official duties, not to create a conflict of interest, and not to cause damage to property and reputation of the company;
  • take care of the interests of the company preserving corporate values;
  • strive to find optimal solutions that combine low cost and high efficiency.

With the aim of having feedback, I suggest the implementation of the following measure. In the case of the fundamental disagreement, the employee has the right to appeal to a general manager pre-informing the supervisor of his intentions.

As business ethics is an essential part of the corporate culture of the organization, the described management of corporate code would inevitably lead to changes in corporate culture. The described code of ethics would create the image of an ethical, socially responsible company in the eyes of business partners, customers, government agencies, the media, and others. It is also should be noted that the corporate code of ethics is presented above as a tool for managing the organization would allow managers to significantly improve the efficiency of the company along with the preservation of fair wages.

In drafting my code of ethics, I relied upon deontological theory. In making the assessment committed by the action, deontology is guided by its compliance or noncompliance with certain rules. Sometimes it is called the ethics of duty or obligation, or an ethical system based on the rules of behavior, as they are the basis of the concept of responsibility. I chose this theory since it involves the performance of the following tasks, which were necessary to the company:

  • maintaining and strengthening the corporate spirit.
  • formation and development of corporate identity.
  • support of the business reputation and strengthening the status of its authority
  • maintaining good wages
  • providing the greatest benefit to the majority.

At the same time, I propose the implementation of another theory, which is based on respect and protection of individual rights and freedom including the individual’s right to privacy, freedom of conscience, freedom of speech, and proper consideration of claims. With this approach, for example, the company provides the need to protect the rights of workers and freedom of speech in case they allege a violation of the law by their employers (Badaracco & Rosenbaum, 2006).

The positive side of this point of view on business ethics is that it protects the freedom and privacy of individuals. However, there is the flip side of the coin – this approach can be a barrier to improving productivity and efficiency as companies often create a working environment where the focus is primarily on the legal protection of the rights of individuals, but not on actual results of the organization.

Truthfully, it seems that two different theories could cause some conflicts. However, company management is never easy. Nevertheless, I am sure that with the help of an appropriate approach and attention the fair resolution of potential conflicts is undoubtedly possible.

In conclusion, it should be stressed that I believe that the chosen theory would be successful and would meet the company requirements, namely the preservation of fair wages, integrity, and devotion to local sourcing.
