Concept of Work-Life Balance

Working from 9 to 5 p.m. is slowly losing its relevance. Past generations may have considered work the most crucial thing in life. However, today people are becoming more aware of the relationship between work and health. There is a growing awareness of the place of personal fulfillment in one’s life. The concept of work-life balance speaks for itself: it is a sense of harmony between career and family life, without conflict between them.

For example, if a person needs to work overtime, he may have a conflict between work and family. Eventually, he will not be able to perform his duties equally well at work and in the family. Typically, when people talk about achieving work-life balance, they talk about a work schedule that does not require them to sacrifice their time for longer work hours. Creating this balance is often considered critical to employee well-being and an excellent organizational culture.

However, employees increasingly have to leave the workplace to maintain a work-life balance. This is especially true for women, who often have childcare responsibilities. That is why several policy changes need to be made to ensure that work-life balance is not a reason to fire an employee. The most critical change in this context is the introduction of more flexible hours for women with children. At the moment, some companies are already considering such changes (Heffernan, 2015).

Changing the work schedule to a more flexible one is critical to avoid burnout for employees who have children. Furthermore, it should not be forgotten that driving is also a full-time job. Balancing personal life and work involves enough time for both childcare and formal work. This is why it is vital to legalize flexible schedules for young parents. At the same time, it is essential to keep their wages at the same level because parenthood involves extensive spending. Thanks to these legislative changes, it will be possible to ensure that work-life balance does not provoke young parents to leave their jobs.
