“Future of Nursing” Implementation of the IOM

Work of Committee of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation

The Committee of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (2010) is credited with bringing healthcare and public health system reforms. One of the key responsibilities of the committee was examining the capacity of the nurses to determine whether they comply with the healthcare standards. The committee conceptualized individual roles of the nursing workforce to understand the issues affecting professionalism. Some of the major concerns in the healthcare sector include shortages, social issues, and challenges in the use of current and future technology.

The committee was also mandated with the responsibility of developing national recommendations to address training and recruitment of nurses (Committee of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, 2010). In addition, the recommendations are expected to propose possible changes to the nursing education system to improve quality in the service delivery process. The other role of the committee was on possible policy changes to support the public sector and other institutions. The agenda of changing policies at the local, state, and national levels was important if reforms in the nursing sector were to be achieved. Through policy changes, the committee expected the shortage problem to be addressed through a sustainable and permanent program.

The Committee of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation was also responsible for designing a system that would expand the nursing faculty and improve the education sector to increase the number of qualified professionals. Similarly, the committee’s work entailed examining possible solutions to the problems affecting the service care delivery system among nurses to improve efficiency in the current and future nursing care delivery system.

The committee also worked on ways of attracting and retaining competent nurses in acute, ambulatory, and public health sectors. In addition, competence was perceived as important in the primary care, community, and long-term nursing care sector. The committee was also mandated with the task of developing policies that would transform the nursing practice, education, leadership, and data management in the nursing workforce.

The overall work of the committee was therefore to propose and develop sustainable and workable solutions to the issues that have been affecting nursing care for a long time. Similarly, the committee also concentrated on the positive transformation of systems hitherto controlling care delivery processes, to ensure competence, efficiency, and improved quality among the nursing professionals.

Importance of the IOM “Future of Nursing” Report

The “Future of Nursing” report can be described as one of the recent milestones formulated in the nursing profession. The report indicated areas that should be changed in the nursing profession to increase competence and efficiency among the workforce. Some of the areas that were targeted and which are presented in the report include transforming the roles of nurses, responsibilities, and the entire system to improve quality and enhance efficiency during the nursing care delivery system.

The other significant importance of the “Future of Nursing” report is identifying the valuable insights and responsibilities of nurses in the entire health care system. Nurses take the largest segment of professionals in the health care sector. The report has managed to identify this important fact and incorporate its importance and facilitate improvement of nursing care as expected by the Affordable Care Act (ACA). The report also indicates how nurses should be incorporated into the health care sector and work together with other healthcare professionals to improve quality and enhance preparedness for increased efficiency and competence (CGFNS International, Inc, 2002).

The report also illustrates the required engagements and training standards for the nurses, a move that will increase efficiency and improve the quality of services rendered by all nursing professionals. The report, therefore, offers a comprehensive guideline on the changes that ought to be implemented in the nursing care sector to improve working conditions, increase enrollment rates, and ensure that all nurses work together with other healthcare professionals for increased efficiency.

The intent of the Future of Nursing: Campaign for Action

According to California Action Coalition, (2012), the Future of Nursing, Campaign for Action addresses issues on nurses’ education by emphasizing the need for nurses to practice to their full education and training capabilities. In addition, it emphasizes the need to have well-educated nurses who have achieved the highest possible levels of education. In addition, there is an emphasis on the need to have partnerships among nurses, physicians, and other healthcare professionals. Planning and policy establishment should also be within the mandates of professional nurses.

The rationale for State-Based Actions Coalitions

State-based actions are established with the sole aim of bringing positive changes or creating a connection between affected groups and the relevant authorities. Similarly, state-based actions are established with the aims of addressing the plights of members within their organizations and ensuring that fairness and justice are exercised. In the formation of coalitions, several issues are considered. One of the rationales that promote emergence and coalitions between two or more state-based actions includes increasing the scope of information to be collected and increasing the workforce. In addition, coalitions promote brainstorming among the key stakeholders in each of the state-based actions and the main aim is to increase the speed of action and reduce time-wasting.

Funding is another issue that encourages the emergence of two or more state-based actions, at which different groups come together to accumulate more funds that are meant to sustain and facilitate their actions. Although some state-based actions have individual funding, coalitions reduce unnecessary spending, since most of the activities are carried out from a central ground.

Coalitions are also justified based on the need for experts in specific fields of their objectives. For example, one state-based action group would require the expertise of specific individuals like engineers or medical experts and they would therefore seek the participation of other state-based actions specializing in those areas (Canadian Nurses Association, 2000). Similarly, the combination of employees and other staff from different organizations brings about competence, since the involved parties select the best individuals to perform the expected tasks.

Although the coalition parties can work independently, their actions are mostly summarized and analyzed from a central platform with experts being derived from the involved parties. Coalitions have proved to be some of the best approaches for state-based actions since they bring together the operations and contributions of different parties with the aims of improving the quality and outcome of results.

One State-Based Action

One of the state-based actions in the USA is The Alliance for Natural Health USA, which is mandated with the responsibility of ensuring that healthcare issues are addressed effectively. In addition, the state-based action also deals with identifying corporations that are misusing resources and people who do not comply with the set bills and legislations. According to the objectives of the Alliance, all groups and corporations dealing with illegal activities, or undermining the health of individuals and livestock should be exposed to spearhead changes and reforms in the specific groups.
