Language Concept Development

Introduction

There are certain situations that foster early language development and there are some other situations where the language development could be discouraged. It is certain that greater attention and care will improve the ability of absorption of language. “This paper presents the situations that foster early language development, situations that discourage adequate early language development and how early language environments affect subsequent language development.” (Sawetch, 2009, para.1).

Situations that foster early language development

There are a number of situations that can foster early language development of the children by way of social and instructional interactions of teachers and parents. The situations at school are different from the situations at home. The situation that stimulates and develops the skills in reading, writing and speaking of the children is necessary at schools for early language development. Books, papers and writing aids are the three important instruments used by the teachers at schools. The teacher can ask the children to read a passage and to explain whatever they understood from the passage. The second step is to ask them to write on the wring aids something in which the children are interested. Making the children interested in reading papers and other types of informative books will certainly help them in language development. Opportunities for dramatic play, singing songs, making speeches, declaration, conversations are some of the important methods for language development of the children at schools. The children must be provided with opportunities to develop their skills at home also. Parents are the first factor in developing the language of the children since they interact more time with children. They must know whether their children get opportunities for that or not. They can inspire their children by way of reading louder some of the interesting topics in front of them. Taking them to the library, hearing relevant speeches and watching movies also will help in language development in early ages of children. Providing opportunities for paying bills and filling some of the irrelevant forms like filling of coupons also will aid to improve the language of the children. Some of the ways that can promote the language development among children are: allowing them to hear the rhythm of language, actions with the music and stories, call and reply activities, making them to call the names of objects and helping them to identify the accurate color, shape and size of the objects, helping them to be familiar with new concepts and terms through stories and magazines, preparing them to be able to construct correct sentences and to use proper pronunciation and grammar, making them to grasp the questions and to answer to these questions properly, making them to do activities in a small group, games in computer and cards, solving puzzles and chart activities.

Situations that discourage adequate early language development

Absence of parents or lack of parental caring is the first hampering element in early language development among children. Some parents are not at all interested in speaking and spending time with their children. But, some parents buy and give whatever their children need but they would not speak even a word to them. Lack of interactions with children will certainly lead to inadequate language development. Some teachers also cause problem because, they do not give any opportunity to the children to develop their skill in writing, talking and thinking. Personal illness, such as hearing loss, inability to speak and lack of vision are also discouraging factors of early language development. Mother-child dynamic is necessary to promote language concept development. So, the children who have no good relation with their mothers are often found to have less language development skills. Lack of interaction with friends, teachers, peer groups and relatives also lead to inadequate language development.

How early language environments affect subsequent language development

Researches report that the attention of parents, carers and teachers can encourage acquiring language skills by children. Environment is a factor that can encourage the development of language skill. Environment around a child is the society that includes parents, relatives, neighbors, teachers, friends, peer groups etc. It is found that children who are more interacting with such people in the society would develop language skills very easily. Therefore, the care given to a child is an important aspect in its growth. A child develops confidence, trust, openness, and understanding through interactions with others. Children in infancy listen to what others speak and show. Then they start to act according to these auto-suggestions in their mind. When a child becomes five years old, the acquisition of language skill would be completing.

Conclusion

“In short, this paper mainly deals with three important aspects of language development among children, namely situations that foster early language development, situations that discourage adequate early language development and how early language environments affect subsequent language development.” (Children’s language development. n.d, para.2). It is a fact that teachers, parents and day carers can foster language development of children. There are some situations and exercises by which the children may have more language development. At the same time, some situations will discourage the learning capacity of children.
