Tortures in War: Whether Justify Them or to Argue

War… Listening to these words, it is impossible to stay calm. A lot of frightening and horrible pictures appear in the memory, which was seen in the movies about wars or TV programs with documentary videos. War is a cruel and terrible affair and it is impossible to avoid the tortures which are the essential part of every war. Information is one of the most valuable aspects, which is necessary during the war and enemies are ready for everything to get this information. Usage of the tournament during the war is unacceptable as it is inhuman and people should think thoroughly about whether to use them or not.

Torture is “the systematic infliction of physical torment on detained individuals… for confession, information, or intimidation” (Rejami, p. 35). There are a lot of types of tortures that may be used to get everything from the person that is necessary. Tortures are some types of violence that are directed on the person with the aim to make him/her feel pain and to do what is wanted. The crueler the torture, the higher level of possibility, that the person will be broken and will do what is demanded. Reading Levinson it is possible to compose two types of torture, physical and moral. It is my consideration that moral torture may be more dangerous and harmful for the person than physical, taking into consideration modern opportunities and medicament which may be used during the tortures.

Torture and morality are two incompatible notions. Tortures cannot be understood and explained from the point of view of morality. It is unacceptable to torment people as it is not we who created them and it is not in our right to provide pain to others. We are simple people and to decide whether to torture this or that person is not in our power. The modern level of education in civilized countries should be on the supportive side to the disgusting attitude to the tortures during the war with the aim to get information or conviction. The reason is that the higher personal education, the higher level of morality of people exists. Personal morality in the modern world is structured according to the principles which Church provides. The Bible studying is the main guide of people and it teaches them to love people, to treat them as people want to be treated. Do you want to be tortured? It is understood that no, so why do people try to impart such actions on others? This rhetorical question has no answer as people’s cruelty cannot be explained. So, there is nothing moral in the tortures which are provided in wartime, even with the purpose to get more information and operating more quickly.

But still, there are people who try to justify tournaments during the war. The arguments which they can provide are a necessity of public safety, that the war conditions are such that they require tortures implementation, that they work, or that “torture is a reasonable choice in national emergencies” (Rejali, p. 445). People may support tortures, but my strong consideration is that they do not, when extreme situations, such as war, are maintained. But these feelings disappear as the war end and people begin to judge the tortures which were provided, listening about the scope of suffering which people had to suffer. It seems that there is the confidence that tortures should be provided to the enemies and not to our citizens. The question arouses here, whether our enemies are not people, whether they do not have parents, children, and wives? They have and the war is the confrontation of the states, and people are not guilty that they appeared to be the participants of the terrible events, such as war.

The existence of tortures contrary to public opinion is possible in the case if the government supports the idea of them. The main condition for torture existence is government support. Tortures may also arise “because security bureaucracies overwhelm those assigned to monitor them” (Rejali, p. 46). The other reason is that war requires quick confession and tortures are the only ways to provide this confession. Nevertheless, my convictions are that tortures demoralize a person and are unacceptable in the modern world even if the time of war would have been.

Tortures are unacceptable in the modern world, even if we are talking about war times. War is a great disaster for the whole of mankind. The world civilization has suffered so many cases of bloody and cruel wars that it is impossible to be surprised with something, but still, people do not stop be horrified by the tortures which are the supporters of every war. Watching war archives and listening for the stories about painful and unbearable sufferings which people had to sustain it is impossible to avoid surprising about the cruelty of people and the measures of their anger to the people who had done nothing to deserve such treatment. The Declaration of Human Rights which was accepted in 1948 is the main confirmation that the public is against the barbarian treatment of people.
