Climate Change: Annotated Bibliography

Climate change can be viewed from several points; nevertheless, it has become one of the leading social problems. The way to deal with the threat posed by this issue is to manage social and political difficulties at the same time. Thus, there is evidence of social changes, expressed in a growing interest in the topic of climate change and the strengthening of green movements. For instance, it concerns states’ authorities, non-profit organizations, activists, scientists and ordinary people.

Bevan, James. “Climate Change: Too True to Be Good.” RSA, 2018, RSA House, London. Speech.

The speech by the Environment Agency’s Chief Executive, James Bevan, focuses on the demand for meaningful action. He emphasizes that the most crucial aspect is behavior change which prevents destructive effects on the environment (Bevan). Bevan talks about the danger of climate change in terms of global human problems. He encourages people to act as soon as possible as all places have been affected by this issue. There is a need for social change as rising temperatures are directly responsible for environmental degradation. A fundamentally new approach is needed as the consequences of the harm created by climate change become almost irreversible; it is time for decisive collective action.

Editorial. “The Guardian View on Climate Change: A Global Emergency.” The Guardian, 2018.

Climate change has become an escalating threat to human health, employment and security. The Guardian article aims to present an outlook for the environmental problem from the perspective of authorities’ policies. The audience is considered people mainly unfamiliar with this issue. The editors urge governments to take action to combat climate change. There is a negative trend; for instance, Donald Trump withdrew the US from the Paris accords. Latin America’s countries’ governments accelerate deforestation; Australia faced droughts and wildfires (Editorial). The fight against climate depends on the actions of the government.

NASA: Climate Change and Global Warming. NASA, 2021.

The NASA website presents data on key indicators that affect climate. These are carbon dioxide, global temperature, arctic ice minimum, ice sheets, sea levels (NASA). This resource’s purpose is to educate and provide up-to-date data on the current situation. Climate change impacts all countries worldwide (NASA). NASA emphasizes that it is necessary to be aware of real circumstances. Consequently, the audience can form opinions more effectively with reliable information about the weather, atmosphere, states’ ecological parameters, and other essential factors for studying physical and economic geography (NASA). Resources in this section include interactive maps, infographics and videos. Supporting the authors’ opinion that knowledge is crucial, it is important to know that human activity leads to adverse outcomes for livelihoods and health.

Bandura, Albert, and Lynne Cherry. “Enlisting the Power of Youth for Climate Change.” American Psychologist, vol. 75, no. 7, 2019, pp. 945–951.

Climate change involves a social change, as the green movement is modified. Bandura and Lynne (2019) claim that the process unites active youth in the expert climate community. Shortly, young activists will dominate each country’s climate movement (Bandura and Lynne 447). The current generation is more open to new global trends; they can easily integrate principles into work and everyday life. It is crucial to stay current with the latest climate change news, especially with international politics and climate solutions (Bandura and Lynne 447). Bandura and Lynne’s point is reliable as new and affordable methods of generating energy from renewable sources appear every day.

Barnes, Michele L., et al. “Social Determinants of Adaptive and Transformative Responses to Climate Change.” Nature Climate Change, vol. 10, 2020, pp. 823–828.

This research was carried on a coral island in the Manus Province of Papua New Guinea to understand climate change responses. People’s adaptive capacity drives the ways of how the population reacts to ecological change (Barnes et al. 1). Barnes et al. proved that this issue results in behavior and social change, leading to new approaches to minimize the outcomes (4). People can not ignore climate change as taking action against this issue is inseparable from social problems.
