The Black Lives Matter Movement Against Police Violence

Black Lives Matter is an international activist movement founded in the United States in 2013. The movement aims to fight racism and violence aimed at African Americans. The movement was formed by three activists after a fatal shooting of a black teenager, Trayvon Martin. BLM movement gained the peak of its popularity in 2020, when George Floyd was killed by a policeman (Encyclopaedia Britannica, 2021). The policeman knelt over the man’s neck for several minutes despite the fact that he said that he could not breathe. This case has been spread over the whole world via social nets and draw attention to the problems of racism and police violence in the United States. Black Lives Matter movement aims to bring attention to inequality and to violence aimed at black people.

My argument is that this movement should become a catalyst for active fighting any kind of discrimination and police violence. First of all, it brings people’s attention to the black discrimination and police violence, which is a real fact. However, it is important not go to extremes and to keep balance, not being too radical. I think that the essence of the movement is, first of all, in the idea that people of all ancestries are equal to each other. No one should be an object of prejudice and violence, despite the colour of the skin. It is also important to remember that one of the main problems here is police violence. To my mind, it should bring attention to the authorities.

BLM has many goals. It draws attention to the way Black people are unfairly treated in the society. It fights racism through protests and political actions. It fights combat brutality and over-policing, demanding to reduce the police funds and to spend the freed money to social initiatives. It also demands better training for police that would reduce the cases of violence against the minority communities.

The Black Lives Matter movement should be brought to the attention of a wide public because many African Americans have been killed by police and no justice has been served justice to the community or for the families. It also should have become a trigger for the change in the police’s attitude to the minority communities. Besides, I think that it should bring the society closer to the acceptance of the people of all ancestries, to fighting bias and prejudice.

However, all the initiatives should be peaceful, because it is impossible to fight the violence with violence. Drawing people’s attention and peaceful protests have to be the main instrument of conveying the message.
